Just thought I'd share if it's not already posted farther up in the thread...

http://leg1.state.va.us/cgi-bin/legp504.exe?000+cod+18.2-94

§ 18.2-94. Possession of burglarious tools, etc.

If any person have in his possession any tools, implements or outfit, with
intent to commit burglary, robbery or larceny, upon conviction thereof he
shall be guilty of a Class 5 felony. The possession of such burglarious
tools, implements or outfit by any person other than a licensed dealer, shall
be prima facie evidence of an intent to commit burglary, robbery or larceny.

(Code 1950, § 18.1-87; 1960, c. 358; 1970, c. 587; 1975, cc. 14, 15.)

There was a case a few years ago where they attempted to charge a fellow of possessing "burglar tools" that consisted of a laptop replicating stolen credit cards. It was dismissed but they had a laundry list of other charges that stuck. I cannot find the case at this time but someone might manage to dig it up.

IANAL but they really only do something about it if you are caught breaking into something you don't own. It's like a 2 for 1 Burglary and Possession of Burglary Tools.

I think VA is kind of iffy about lockpicking tools. On the other hand physical and social security is fun.

I think it's important to not just look at digital security issues, but physical ones too. Most of my successful "hacks" were just social engineering, shoulder surfing, or riding someone's coat tails through a door.

I would love an excuse to buy a lockpicking kit, but until I can get someone to show me the ropes...

I work in the infosec field, and depending on the level of the group I would love to either teach or learn more... someone in this thread mentioned SecurityTube, and I've found that site to be a great resource as well

Just the attempt at group learning and participating in some kind of a Hampton Roads infosec group would be a good experience I think
If anyone's even vaguely interested (I make no claims on being awesome, I would enjoy teaching though) take a look at http://www.LinkedIn.com/in/ericgearhart to get a feel for "where I'm at" and if there are any topics anyone would be interested in seeing in a class (designing secure networks maybe?)

I'm completely open to learning too... if there are some security senseis out there I'd love to learn more
